*Literacy*
“It Matters to This One”
Approximately 37 million young people ages 7-18 live in the United States. Of those, about half could benefit greatly from a high-quality formal mentoring relationship with a caring adult. Our literacy program, known as BookPartners is a unique school-based program for children offering both academic and emotional support through one-to-one mentoring. The program currently serves four elementary schools in Jackson, Shaftsburg and Howard City, Michigan.
The goal of Methodist Children’s Home Society through the BookPartners program is twofold. First, we strive to end the cycle of illiteracy. Secondly, we see this as an opportunity to help instill good values and raise self-esteem. To achieve this goal with our students, BookPartners stresses several basic behaviors: Accountability, Attendance, Effort, Manners, and Neatness.
